The Intoxicating Scent of BBQ Comes to Route 1

When The Varsity student housing complex opened in the fall of 2011, we were all excited to grab a gourmet burger from Bobby’s Burger Palace or drink a pint down at Looney’s Pub. Next to delight your senses, The Maryland Smokehouse opened last week with a variety of southern dishes.

The Maryland Smokehouse is an upscale casual restaurant that reaches decidedly south to offer delicious Memphis-style barbeque. Savor mouthwatering dishes from succulent ribs to tender beef brisket, slow cooked in an authentic hickory pit smoker complemented by unique cocktails, southern sides and delectable desserts. The owner, Chris George, is a Memphis native that will oversee the in-house smoking. Chris aims to serve his signature dishes with warm hospitality in a vibrant, bluesy atmosphere, with the focus always on the customer.

Prices range from $6 for a pulled pork sandwich to $24 for a full slab of ribs plus two sides and hushpuppies. For a limited time, students will receive 15% off their meals with valid identification.

The Maryland Smokehouse is located at 8150 Baltimore Avenue next to Bobby’s Burger Palace. Paid parking is available in the garage behind the retail level.

Farmers Market Recipes:
Baby Bok Choy Soup

The Downtown College Park Farmers Market opened yesterday for the 2013 season and featured a cooking demo from the owner of local restaurant Fishnet. Ferhat Yalcin used baby bok choy and spring onions sold at the market for the base of his soup and cooked on site for market patrons to watch. Upon finishing the dish, patrons were able to sample the soup.

Revamped Downtown Farmers market Reopens April 14th

The City of College Park, in partnership with the Downtown College Park Management Authority, is pleased to announce the relaunch of the Downtown College Park Farmers Market (DCPFM) for the 2013 season. Please join us as the market reopens weekly beginning Sunday, April 14th followed by a Grand Opening on Sunday, May 5th as more produce becomes available.  The market operates in the City Hall parking lot from 10:00am – 2:00pm. Free parking is available throughout Downtown on Sundays, including the parking garage off Knox Road.

In its third year of operation, the market is now under new management and will offer producer-only fruits and vegetables, while no longer allowing items purchased wholesale. The management team is currently recruiting vendors to provide a diverse set of products that will enable the DCPFM to become a premier market in the region.

Currently approved vendors include Bear’s Honeypot, Bill’s Backyard BBQ, Flower of the Forest Farm, Grandma Vera’s Bakery, Heavenly Created Desserts, Miller Farms, Pleitez Produce, and Smith Meadows. For more information on these vendors please visit the market’s page. Several other vendors are currently being considered, so we expect this list to grow as the season progresses.

The management team has currently scheduled events for both the season opening and Grand Opening dates:

  • April 14th – Farmers Market reopens for 2013 season
    • Cooking demo with Ferhat Yalcin, owner of College Park’s own Fishnet restaurant
