Gailes' Violin Shop, Inc. is a one-stop-shop for all enthusiasts of the violin, and one of Maryland's music landmarks.  In business since 1975, Gailes' has a base of loyal customers amateur & professional - from Maine to Florida - who know they can trust Gailes' for the highest of quality products and service from an experienced staff.

Many customers are families that come on teachers' referrals from area schools.  "The teachers referrals come because they know the effort, time, and hard work we put in," shop owner and long-time College Park resident Bill Gailes says.

Every autumn, the shop prepares for the crush of students eager to rent and learn instruments. Gailes says, "It's all about the kids." He recognizes that "if there is a bad tonality on the string or any other part of an instrument, it isn't working correctly, or it doesn't respond quickly enough, it's going to frustrate the person who's trying to learn."  So, they take extra time to fine tune every rental instrument and "every instrument and case that is rented gets spiffed up and cleaned up, so that the students are proud to play on them."

Gailes respects that for a family to invest in an instrument and private lessons, a good amount of time and money is required. "We honor that by being equally committed in what we do for them," he says.  Thus, Gailes' encourages customers of any age or experience to always start with a rental ($55 violin or viola, $110 cello, for 3 month rentals).

Repairs may range from setting a sound post for free while you wait to restoring your one-of-a-kind $100,000 violin, but all work is done on-site in Gailes' Old World craftsman-style shop.  Gailes says, "what we do here, and our technology -knives, glues, files, horsehair - has been used for hundreds of years, and our myself and our other restorers have a combined nearly 150  years of experience."  It's no wonder Gailes' Violin Shop is THE place to go for violinists on the East Coast.
